A Chimney Flue is the main passage way for the flue gases. This area extends roughly 70% of the chimney length, and is constructed in sections as the chimney is built. For Masonry Chimneys this consists of Vitreous Clay Flue tiles. These tiles can vary in diameter but typically are 2ft in length. As the brick is laid, masons’ bed or lay the tiles on top of one another using an insulating refractory mortar to seal them together.
As you can see a lot of things can cause defects in the Flue lining, even a small deficiency can increase the risk of hazards originated from your chimney. Poisonous and/or Carcinogenic gases can infiltrate the home. Creosote can accumulate outside of the flue lining causing a fire to spread to combustibles surrounding the chimney. Heat over time alone can cause combustible materials around the chimney to ignite. Lastly, they can cause further damage to the masonry surrounding the flue lining potentially leading to more money out of your pocket.
